Palliative Care

While you’re in the hospital, your doctor may ask the palliative care team to manage your pain and symptoms, help with treatment decisions, and enhance your quality of life.

The palliative care team consists of physicians, advanced practice nurses, a pharmacist, social worker and chaplain. We develop individualized plans for each patient's needs. We can also help with physical, social, spiritual, advanced care planning and practical concerns.

What Is Palliative Care?

Palliative care provides comfort and symptom management for patients with chronic illnesses, who are continuing aggressive therapies. Palliative care is also available in hospital settings to patients with a serious illness, regardless of life expectancy.

Palliative care may be appropriate when:

  • A patient's pain and symptoms are becoming difficult to manage.
  • There is a decline in the patient's condition.
  • The focus of the patient's care is on comfort and quality of life.
  • Other treatment methods are no longer effective.
